Should You be Hiding Your Kitchen Outlets?

As custom home builders, one of our primary goals is to create homes that are both beautiful and functional. One simple but powerful way to accomplish this is by strategically placing kitchen outlets. Outlets are an essential part of any modern kitchen, but standard outlets on beautiful backsplash tile can disrupt the clean lines and seamless look of your home. By simply concealing them, you can keep the convenience without disrupting the look you want to achieve!

How Do You Create Hidden Outlets

I first came across the concept of hidden outlets in a multimillion-dollar home in Naples, FL, in the early 2000s. I was impressed by the innovative design, the clean look, and the ease of use. Since then, it has become a staple in every home I design!

This technique works best with custom kitchen cabinets, providing a much cleaner look than metal channels or outlet plug moldings. So, to make it happen, we collaborate closely with cabinet makers. We add approximately 2 inches to the bottom of the cabinet style/rail, creating a hidden channel for outlets and LED cabinet lights. Additionally, we incorporate a “light shield” wood element on the bottom of the cabinet box, which breaks the sight lines and enhances the hidden electrical outlet effect even more.

What About Daily Clutter?

For clients concerned about hanging cords and daily clutter, we offer innovative solutions during the cabinet design phase. Hidden outlets in your custom cabinets work best for single-use, or less often accessed appliances. This will vary from person to person, so we will make sure to discuss your lifestyle in the kitchen design phase.

Daily appliances like toasters or coffee grinders are better stored in dedicated spaces such as pantries (where there’s no need to hide power outlets) or appliance garages with door coverings. Strategic outlet placement behind these appliances eliminates the need for visible cords. This way, regular-use appliances can be easily accessed when needed and neatly tucked away afterward, preserving the clean lines of your kitchen.

There are plenty of options with creative solutions to help meet the needs of your home and lifestyle!

Beyond the Kitchen

While the kitchen is a prime area for hiding outlets, we also apply this design principle in other parts of the house, like bathrooms. instead of positioning electric outlets in standard locations, we place them on side walls or within cabinets. This keeps them practically close for use without interfering with the overall look of your space. It can also help to keep your sink space uncluttered- always a plus!
