Explore Mysa Hus- A Scandinavian Style Home
For the Mysa Hus project, we wanted to craft a home that prioritized intentional living, connection, and wellness. This Scandinavian-style custom build is a peaceful retreat where families can disconnect from distractions and focus on what truly matters. Derived from the Swedish word “Mysa,” meaning “to cozy up,” Mysa Hus is built with its name in mind!
Spec homes often aim to appeal to a broad audience, but Mysa Hus was inspired by Scandinavian culture, natural materials, and a lifestyle centered on family, wellness, and intentionality.
The Inspiration Behind Mysa Hus
The project began with a lot in Cottagewood that had been held for a year. Originally, two separate homes were designed for the space, but both were canceled in 2024. This gave us a chance to create something new and meaningful.
I hadn’t built a spec home in 16 years and wanted Mysa Hus to be more than just another house—it needed to be a reflection of my design principles and personal wellness philosophy.
Designing for Wellness & Family Living
Every aspect of Mysa Hus is intentional to prioritize family time and minimize distractions. We did this by creating a lot of technology-free spaces. WIth no TVs in the main living areas or children’s rooms, the family will have more opportunity for connection and less mindless entertainment.
We also designed with a cabin-like style, making use of clean lines, natural materials, and a focus on natural light, functionality, and a sense of calm. Even though the home is in an urban area, we pulled elements from a weekend getaway like neutral colors, Scandinavian design, and other key elements to make the home feel like a nature retreat. A south-facing design helps to maximize natural light (good for health, mood, and connection)!
Additionally, our design style has us making use of the backyard space as a total wellness zone. Of course, we added a pool for health and fitness (and fun)! We also added a wellness suite featuring an exercise room, sauna, cold plunge, and flexible-use space. If you know anything about me, you know I’m all about the sauna life! The wellness suite could also be converted into a guest house (ADU) in the future if that better meets the families needs.

Mysa Hus as a Brand
Mysa Hus is more than a one-time project—it’s a concept that could shape future homes. We partnered with LAB Minneapolis (Molly Windmiller & team) to develop a distinct brand identity, ensuring that Mysa Hus is recognized for its philosophy as much as its design.
Storytelling and branding are just as vital as construction, helping to create an emotional connection with potential homeowners. The long-term vision is to build 10-20 more Mysa Hus homes in Minnesota and beyond, spreading the concept of a mindful, wellness-oriented home.
What Sets Mysa Hus Apart
Mysa Hus prioritizes materials that contribute to a healthy, comfortable, and sustainable home:
Wellness & Sound Control
Rockwool insulation for superior soundproofing.
Pella triple-pane windows to create a quieter environment that lowered energy consumption while letting in plenty of natural lighting.
Exterior ZIP system insulation for additional energy efficiency and durability.
Air Quality & Health-Conscious Materials
Low-VOC paints, stains, and materials to reduce off-gassing and improve indoor air quality.
All-electric appliances to eliminate gas emissions and create a cleaner living space.
Consultation with health experts to ensure that we used as many natural elements as possible and that all materials contribute to a non-toxic home environment.
Intentional Design Choices
A wood-burning fireplace instead of gas, encouraging slower, more mindful living., and a more natural environment.
Cedar wood soffits and natural material finishes to add warmth, clean lines, natural wood tones, and authenticity.
